Special Education
Special education provides support, adjustments, accommodations, and related services to children and adolescents with a documented disability. A student with special needs will likely benefit from supplementary educational services, including highly individualized learning approaches, the use of advanced classroom technology or materials, or a learning area specifically modified to be accessible to students with special needs. While children can have many types of special needs, the most common include:
What Does a Special Education Professional Do?
Special Education Professionals have a valuable opportunity to positively impact students’ lives by preparing them to be successful in the classroom and into adulthood. They work with students with mild to severe mental, psychological, learning, or physical disabilities and a variety of learning conditions. Special education professionals include Special Education Teachers, Educational Diagnosticians, Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Teachers of the Visually Impaired, and more.
These professionals offer additional services, multilevel differentiated instruction, individualized programs, specialized placements and environments to guarantee that all children’s educational needs are addressed and met. They plan and execute IEPs, evaluate students’ educational skills, tailor and modify academic curriculum to accommodate children’s learning needs and abilities, and evaluate students’ goals and progress.
What Is an IEP (Individualized Educational Program)?
Students receive a highly individualized educational program that corresponds with their Individualized Educational Program, which is a written legal document that is designed to enhance a child’s educational experience and meet a child’s special needs. An IEP provides a comprehensive program of all special education services that a child receives and comprises goals, testing modifications, present performance, and settings.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is the nation’s special education law that provides “specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability.” IDEA provides rights and immunities to students with disabilities and their parents, guardians and families. A recent study indicates that approximately 14% of all K-12 public school students receive special education services under IDEA, and an estimated 33% of students receiving special education services had specific learning disabilities.
